 Flirt (Short Novella)
« Thread Started on Feb 1, 2010, 9:05am »

...and I DO mean novella. 171 wide spaced largish typed pages.

I got this book on Saturday 3 days before release, but it looks as if many people are getting it early. I find it interesting that the novellas look as if they don't have the strict street date the other books do.
Of course I did get this at Kansas City Airport which is in Missouri, so that may explain it

So it took me about an hour and a half to two hours read this and the big "surprise" news is that Anita will come away with a new man in her life. We also get to see her raise some Zombies. And as an added treat or page filler, Laurell give us a few pages of how she came up with this novel, and some comics from a friend about the reason this novel was written.

Satisafyingly unsatisfying - I would rate this book.

Now mind you I paid FULL price at the airport so forgive me if I'm a tad bitter.

And this is why I am refusing to buy this one.

Well that and the fact that I haven't bought a LKH book since TH because they have gone so far downhill.

Wow, Dianne, that sounds terrible. How exactly does this progress the "story?" Not at all, apparently. Of course that would mean actually having a story arc ...

Paying full price for this thing - definitely not a good idea. I paid 1/2 price via Amazon and that didn't feel like quite as much of a rip-off.

There's an afterward describing how the story came about - which we didn't need, along with a comic strip from someone who has become a friend, describing the actual event that was the basis for the beginning of the story. We could have done without that as well. This leaves 158 pages of actual story. And unlike the Micah book which had blank pages in between chapters and huge spacing on the page, I didn't find either the font size or the spacing on the pages to be much different from many other HCs I've read.

Kudos to Laurell for actually creating a very interesting bad guy - one you aren't sure if you'd mind seeing again. The beginning of the story goes on a little long - but it's loosely based on a real event and out of it came the idea for the book. The rest of the story, though, is good.

There are a few things happening in this book that will most likely be referred to in upcoming books. We've known for the last few books that Anita has had less angst about having sex with strangers. It looks like she'll be dealing with new ones - and quite frankly, it wouldn't seem realistic if she doesn't. Just hope Anita doesn't live in the angst like she did with the sex.

Glad I read it - and I did enjoy most of it. However, this could quite easily have been a story in an anthology.

I read it. I liked parts, didn't like parts. I loved that LKH cut way down on the descriptions in this one. The only thing I know this time about Anita's clothes is skirt, suit jacket, tank top, heels. No endless weapon descriptions. I loved seeing Anita back at the office, I loved the zombie raising. I hated Anita and the boys at lunch, all the touching and the inappropriate lust at the lunch table. I just rolled my eyes through the whole scene, as well as the one with Anita angsting over flirting with the waiter.

I also HATED what was done to Nicky and to Tony.

All in all, it was ok. I didn't mind it being so short, since half the reason the books are so long lately is all the endless clothing and weapon descriptions, as well as the endless relationship angst and all the pissing contests with local authorities. I was very glad not to see any of that this time.

I think Danse Macbre was the last book I read, and I have forced myself to keep reading this series for several books before that. It was a hard habit for me to break, I looked forward to each book being released for so long that I felt kind of guilty not running out to buy the newest one! Strange, I know! The books a so darn short and full of nothing that I kind of wish she would just stop or start devoting more time to the stories. She is a very busy lady and I think she may have too much on her plate right now.

I know what you mean. My husband thinks I'm crazy for still reading. Every time I read, he listens to me complain about all the continuity errors and so on, and the ludicrous plot points, and it turning to nothing but sex and angst, and he doesn't understand why I keep punishing myself.

I keep telling him I have a lot invested in the books, in the characters, and there is still enough good to keep me hopeful. It's hard to just stop, even though I am starting to want to give it up too.

What did she call readers like me on amazon? Negative reader or something like that? I guess it is true, but like you I was holding on to some kind of hope and was let down, but she gave me so many hours of great reading in the past, I really shouldn't say anything bad about the newer books.

There's a number of things that drive me nuts about LKH and her over usage of terms, the sex and continuity problems. But I absolutely love losing myself in the worlds she creates.

That constant use of the phrase "define that" drove me crazy too. I bet she still uses it [image]
