The Host was very hard for me to get into as well, but once it hooked me, it really hooked me, and I was very glad that i stuck with it. The sci fi aspects aren't for everyone. I know I for one, wasn't happy with the idea that the protagonist of the story is a woman from a species of creatures who are here to take over the earth, body snatchers.

But the more I read, the more I came to enjoy the heroine, as well as the person's body she took over, not to mention others in the storie.

For trash, I'm currently reading Babysitting the Baumgartners. Really racy. LKH does trash, but she seems to do repetitive, angsty trash these days, sometimes I just want to get on with it already, so I have to find other authors. Never mind the fact that trash/smut isn't why I got into LKH in the first place.

I finished reading The Picture of Dorian Gray and You did if for Me: Friendship and Kindness. I am now reading Living Dead in Dallas. I have finally made it past chapter 2 in that book. I just kept starting it and then getting it side track with another book. I plan to finish the book this time. I am really enjoying it.

Hmmm, maybe I should have stuck with it longer. I don't really read sci-fi, maybe that was why I was having trouble getting into it. I love fantasy though, and since they are placed in the same genre, I thought they would have the same appeal for me. I guess not.

I too had a somewhat difficult time understanding and getting into The Host, but I did get sucked in and enjoyed the story.

So many books in my TBR pile! [image]

Recently read Street Game by Christine Feehan, the Kim Harrison story in Unbound and am currently working on Inked.

Spent a good chunk of the day reading an ARC by Linwood Barclay called Never Look Away. If anyone is looking for a fast paced mystery, this one will be released on 3/16.

I'm in the middle of Irish Fairy and Folk Tales, edited by William Yeats. Great stories!

Just finished reading Deadtown by Nancy Holzner. I wanted to write a review for it, but can't figure out how to do it without going overboard on trying to describe both the world and the situation.

Suffice it to say this is the first in a new Urban Fantasy series that has a very interesting take on different types of 'monsters' and their lack of rights. The main character is a Cerddorion, a shifter who fights demons. Felt it's good enough to watch for the next book.

At Dianne's urging, I'm currently reading Doppelgangster by Laura Resnick. I'm really enjoying the fun chaos in the book - sort of a grown up version of the Stephanie Plum series minus the ridiculous stuff like body fluids, rolling in garbage, destroying cars and two men to choose from.

Thought this would be a nice filler while waiting for the next Stephanie Plum book. Nope. Stephanie takes a back seat here.

I'm reading Bite My Fire by Mary Hughes. First book in a new series features a newly minted probationary detective who only wants to earn that shield permanently. When a call come in in the middle of the night about a potential murder, she's all over it! She finds a guy, I guess kind of a local celebrity, dead in the parking lot of the local bar, his pants down, puncture wounds in his scrotum, body drained of blood. For some odd reason, her mind doesn't go to vampires, but to knitting needles or breast pump kink gone awry.

She meets hunky Bo while looking for suspects. Is he a suspect? A murder? We're not sure, but man is he hot!

This is another book that kind of reminds me of early Stephanie Plum, again, minus the love triangle and the fires and such. The town, Meier's Corner, totally reminds me of the Burg, with so many colorful characters. Just add in a few vampires, and it's tons of fun!

From what I've seen though, this series is one that follows a different hero and heroine, and not an ongoing series about one central person. Think more cooky Dark Hunters, a different woman's POV in every story, but all centered around the same town with the same central issues. So far, there's only three books out, with another scheduled to hit in April.

I've got Deadtown in my TBR file, I'll get to that one eventually, I hear only good things about it.

Will have to check out Bite My Fire.

Just started reading Steamed by Katie MacAlister. Snagged it as a review copy through Library Thing. Will see what this Steam Punk genre is all about.

I have that on my TBR pile, but all I'm currently reading are students' papers - I'm *so* behind on them that I haven't read anything in weeks.

Recently read The Better Part of Darkness by Kelly Gay, the first book in a new Urban Fantasy series about a detective in an area populated with aliens from two other worlds. She also happens to be a divorced mother with a pre-teen daughter, giving us a different perspective of a kick-butt heroine who thinks it might be better if she takes a desk job so her daughter isn't raised motherless.

Also read Blood Magic, the 6th book in the Eileen Wilks World of the Lupi series. This one follows Lily and Rule, but both Sam the dragon and Lily's grandmother (we see her in tiger form again) have a strong presence.

Just started Black Magic Sanction by Kim Harrison. From the blurb on the inside front cover, it looks like Nick is back.
